Dean's Letter - Centering on Risk

Dear Alumni and Friends,

The current economic crisis and events such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai have made risk management one of the hot topics for business schools around the country. Robinson has been a leader in risk management education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and we are making an even greater commitment by adding new faculty and expanding our research through an entire new center dedicated to the economic analysis of risk.

In this issue of State of Business, you will read about CEAR, the Center for the Economic Analysis of Risk, and learn how executives handle risk in everyday situations. An individual who considers dealing with risk one of the most important aspects of his job is Robinson alumnus Eric Joiner, the co-founder and vice chairman of AJC International, Inc., a world leader in the trading and distribution of frozen and refrigerated food products as well as in logistics and logistics services. For Eric, managing risk (such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, and animal diseases) is something he deals with on a daily basis.

In the story beginning on page 12, Eric discusses some of the risks he has managed in building his billion-dollar business. While the stories on Eric and others delve into corporate risk, Robinson’s Personal Financial Planning Director Conrad Ciccotello tells us what advice he gives students on managing their own finances during these turbulent economic times. Rajeev Dhawan, director of the College’s Economic Forecasting Center, provides his first quarterly forecast for 2009. We also have a special feature which looks at business news from behind the camera with Bill Liss, business news reporter for Atlanta’s NBC affiliate, WXIA -TV. We hope you enjoy this issue. Please let us know your comments.
